Australian Scholarships

Australian Scholarships

Australian Scholarships brings together and expands existing scholarship programs in the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions that are managed by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR). Further information can be found at www.australianscholarships.gov.au

There are three programs available under Australian Scholarships. They are:

Endeavour Awards – The Endeavour Awards is the Australian Government’s internationally competitive, merit-based scholarship program providing opportunities for citizens of the Asia-Pacific and Middle East regions to undertake study, research and professional development in Australia. Awards are also available for Australians to do the same abroad. A smaller number of Awards are available for participants from Europe and the Americas. The Endeavour Awards provide individuals with a unique opportunity to further their academic or professional careers. Further information can be found at: www.endeavour.deewr.gov.au

Australian Leadership Awards (ALA) – focus on developing leaders who can influence social and economic policy reform and development outcomes in both their own countries and in the Asia-Pacific region. ALAs provide scholarship support for postgraduate studies in Australia and short-term fellowship opportunities in specialised research, study or professional attachments through participating Australian organisations. Further information can be found at: www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) – aim to contribute to the long-term development needs of Australia's partner countries to promote good governance, economic growth and human development. ADS provides people with the necessary skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes of their own country, through obtaining tertiary qualifications at participating Australian institutions. Further information can be found at: www.ausaid.gov.au/scholar

Other funding sources

International and charitable organisations offer scholarships for international study. You must apply for these scholarships in your home country, not in Australia.

The Association of Commonwealth Universities website provides a scholarships guide for Commonwealth postgraduate students offered by Governments, Rotary International, World Bank, World Health Organisation, Asian Development Bank, United Nations, Rockefeller Foundation and other organisations.

Scholarship study in Australia

Scholarships

There are a range of scholarships available for international students wishing to study in Australia. A scholarship can provide great help with funds for your study, and although there is strong competition for each scholarship, they are definitely worth investigating.

How to apply

Did you know? Interesting facts from Studies in Australia.
Now that you have made the decision to come to Australia to study it is time to put your plans into action.

Here is some advice to help with your course application.

Step 1: Choosing your course and education provider
Step 2: Applying
Step 3: Processing of your application
Step 4: Accepting your offer
Step 5: Preparing for departure

Step 1: Choosing your course and education provider

Think about which courses you are interested in, and if they will lead into your chosen career. Carefully research courses, institutions and their locations. Consider the areas of specialisation offered through different courses, and which specialisations will best suit your intended career path. Once you have decided on the best course, you need to find out which education providers offer it, and which provider best suits your requirements. You might like to consider the size of the campus, the available facilities and the support services available to international students.

Step 2: Applying

Once you have chosen your course and education provider, it is time to apply. Check the entrance and English language requirements to ensure you are eligible to apply. If not, you may have to consider a different course, or bridging or foundation study that may increase your chances.

Contact your education provider and ask about their application requirements and application dates, as these will differ for each provider. Make a note of important deadlines and make sure you meet them. Remember to allow for postal times when sending forms by mail.

International students usually apply directly to Australian institutions either by post or online. You can download application forms from institute websites, or you can request the forms to be posted. Another option is to contact an education agent or an overseas representative of the institution to which you are applying. Your application form will ask you which course(s) you are applying for and give details of the documentation you need to supply.

Most application forms require the following:

  • personal details

  • certified proof of your level of English language proficiency

  • details of previous educational qualifications, such as academic transcripts

  • course preferences (the course(s) you are applying for)

  • a summary of employment experience (if applicable).

If you are still completing your education you can provide evidence of your most recent marks until it is possible to provide your final marks. If the documents you supply are not in English, you must provide an official certified translation. Most institutions charge a non-refundable application fee of around AUD$50-100 that must be included with your application. Some institutions waive this fee if the application is made online.

Before sending your application, check your visa requirements with your local Australian embassy to ensure you will qualify for a visa if you are successful. Visit the Student visas page for more information about visas, or check the list of Australian embassies.

Study Abroad In Brazil For Free?

Yes it’s possible, though you’re probably wondering – what’s the catch? With a little research and investigation you can uncover more international options. Here’s one:

Studying abroad has always been a popular choice, but now even more so. Rising college costs at home are one big reason, but there are others. Study abroad has traditionally meant going to Britain and continental Europe. But now there are many more options in other parts of the world - in Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. You can get an excellent education at a prestigious foreign university for a much lower cost, where the exchange rate and cost of living are in your favor. Then when you graduate, you won’t have a burdensome student debt to pay off.

n general, the tuitions and fees at foreign universities are much lower than their US counterparts. Some are free. The federal universities in Brazil are free. The catch is that it can sometimes be quite difficult to get in.

To give you an idea, at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), there are 33 candidates at the School of Medicine for each opening. Of course, this is the top medical school in the country, so naturally there are a lot of people who want to go there. Next on the list of tough-to-enter, is Petroleum Engineering at the Escola Politecnica of UFRJ with 553 candidates for 25 vacancies. The reason: 1500 new professionals are needed in this field over the next few years and a graduate is almost assured of a well-paying job.

But don’t give up! There are 36 federal universities in Brazil, and there are many other courses of study. The selection is based on the score of the entrance exam (called a vestibular), which all students in Brazil have to take. An easier route for a foreign student is to transfer.

he best schools are rated by the Minister of Education (MEC) from the results of the Exame Nacional de Cursos, better known as the “Provão” (The Big Test).

Graduating students are given a standardized test in their final semester to measure how well they learned. The scores are used to rank the universities by their distinct level of academic quality. The results from 2003 were published in April 2004.

For Engineering, the Institute Militar de Engenharia (IME) in Rio de Janeiro tops the list. For their MBA and Economics program, IBMEC in São Paulo wins the best award. The best school to study dentistry is the Universidade Estadual de Montes Claros in Minas Gerais. Naturally, the highest ranked schools are harder to get in. And not all of them are free federal universities. A list of the schools and their rankings is shown below.

Twenty-five years ago there were few post-graduate course in Brazil. Now there are over 900 tertiary institutions, including 93 universities.

More than 1,000 post-graduate courses are available, most of which benefit from highly proficient faculties, on a par with similar institutions in other countries. You can also participate in extension courses, workshops, lectures, tours, expeditions, and distance-learning.

If you want to go to school in Brazil, you have to know Portuguese. The proficiency test is called the CELPE-BRAS, and the Minister of Education runs it.

This may appear challenging at first, and it is, but acquiring a foreign language is a long-term benefit from studying abroad. Nearly all foreign universities want you to know another language. Millions of students around the world are studying English and taking TOEFL exams. You could certainly do the same thing, only for you it will be the DELE or the Dalf or the CELPE.

You can find both grants and loans for foreign study. But if you haven’t yet figured out how to finance your studies, a good place to look is the International Educational Finance Corp. (IEFC).

Their International Student Loan Program (ISLP) will fund US and Canadian students going away, and also international students coming to study in USA and Canada.

Steve Mittelman is the expert in this area, and he travels throughout the world, visiting and adding more foreign universities to their list of approved institutions-- from Australia to Poland.

Finally, let's review some of the other advantages of foreign study, even if it's not free.

- First, you might be able to complete your program in a shorter amount of time.

- You might be accepted into a program with a higher academic quality than what you could find at home.

Ireland Education

Ireland is an increasingly popular destination for students from all over the world. The friendliness and hospitality for which Irish people are renowned, contribute to the ease with which overseas students adapt to the way of life and in particular, student life.

The international dimension of education is important in Ireland, which has one of the most trade dependent economies in the world. The Irish Government has invested in the internationalisation of our education system, both to promote the international activities and linkages of our colleges and to encourage students from overseas countries to study in Ireland.

Higher Education

Higher Education in Ireland consists of the universities (with associated colleges of education), institutes of technology, and a number of private independent colleges. The universities and institutes of technology are autonomous and self-governing, but are substantially state-funded

Universities

There are nine universities in Ireland - 2 in Northern Ireland and 7 in the Republic. The University of Dublin, Trinity College (TCD), founded in 1592, is the oldest university in Ireland. The National University of Ireland (NUI) is a federal institute consisting of four constituent universities; University College Dublin, National University of Ireland Dublin; University College Cork, National University of Ireland Cork; National University of Ireland Galway and National University of Ireland Maynooth. NUI also has three recognised colleges: National College of Art and Design (NCAD), The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) and St. Angela's College of Education. The University of Limerick (UL) and Dublin City University (DCU) are our newest universities and were founded in 1989. The two universities in Northern Ireland are: the University of Ulster (UU) and the Queen's University of Belfast (QUB).

In addition to offering degrees at Bachelors, Masters and Doctorate levels, over a full range of disciplines, the universities and colleges also undertake research in many areas. Undergraduate and postgraduate diplomas are also available and universities are involved in continuing and distance education programmes (aimed mainly at Irish residents).

Institutes of Technology

There are currently 14 Institutes of Technology located throughout the Republic offering programmes at degree, national diploma and national certificate levels in a wide variety of subjects. Their qualifications are externally validated by Ireland's national certification authority, which ensures that their qualifications reach the highest international standards. Many of the Institutes of Technology also run postgraduate diploma and degree programmes, both taught and research.

Colleges of Education

There are five Colleges of Education for primary school teachers. These colleges offer three year full time courses leading to a B.Ed degree which is the recognised qualification for primary school teaching.

These colleges offer programmes leading to certificates, diplomas and degrees, which have received recognition by Ireland's national certification authority or from other external accreditation institutions (such as universities). Courses on offer include: Accountancy and Business Studies, Law, Humanities, Hotel & Catering, Tourism Studies and Art.

Study Programmes Available to Overseas Students

Junior Year Abroad (JYA) and Study Abroad Programmes (mainly aimed at non E.U. students)

SOCRATES aims to promote the concept of lifelong learning in response to constantly evolving education and training needs. There is a variety of programmes promoted by SOCRATES, including: ERASMUS(higher education)

LINGUA (language-learning)

Student Expenses

The main costs that students can expect to incur while in Ireland include fees*, accommodation and living expenses. These vary considerably depending on the course, the institution and the lifestyle of the student.

*Third level education in Ireland is free for students who are
  • first-time undergraduates and,
  • are E.U. nationals and have been ordinarily resident in an E.U. Member State for at least three of the five years preceding their entry to an approved third-level course.

The universities and colleges have a small number of scholarships for overseas students. Students are advised to contact the institution directly to obtain Application.

Application Procedures

Studying overseas is a very enriching experience however it can be quite costly, hence it is worth spending time and consideration choosing the most suitable programme and most appropriate institution.

Apart from the universities in Northern Ireland, application for most full-time undergraduate courses is made through a Central Applications Office (CAO). The CAO provides an applications pack with a handbook which lists all the courses on offer and gives information on how to apply.
The CAO website is : www.cao.ie

Education overview

South Korean high school education is largely based on the Japanese system. This means it is highly exam-based with a great deal of rote-learning and less room for creativity in the classroom than many Westerners are used to. Inevitably, this has an influence on the system at undergraduate level too. However South Korean culture places a very high emphasis on education and getting into the best schools is seen as one of the most important achievements for South Koreans.

According to the British Council, there are over two million undergraduates in South Korea and over 80 per cent choose to pursue a higher education within the country. The pressure on South Korean students is therefore immense. It is perceived that the only way to get ahead, is to attend one of the top universities, known as SKY (Seoul National University, Korea University and Yonsei University). These are the big three in terms of networking and presitige (most politicians and other decision makers have attended them.) Admission to a prestigious university is considered a key achievement, however, South Korea also has a very large number of students studying overseas, predominantly in the USA, China, Japan and the UK (and at postgraduate level).

Unfortunately, South Korean universities are having trouble attracting students to all of their top university courses and even keeping them in the country, particularly since the recession of 1997, which hit South Korea hard. One positive result of this is that many more South Korean courses are now offering partnership schemes with overseas educators meaning that most undergraduate students will spend at least some of their time overseas.

Smaller and more innovative universities exist in South Korea such as Sogang University. Sogang, as well as Yonsei University, Hongik University and Ewha Womans University are all located close to each other in the same area in Seoul, leading to a very vibrant and studenty feel in this part of the city known as Sinchon.

Other top names include: Seoul National University, Korea University, South Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Pusan National University, Kyungpook National University, and a handful of private institutions such as Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), , Hanyang University, Sungkyunkwan University and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.

Pros and cons

State of the art infrastructure

Interesting and varied culture, climate and geography

Good transport links to Asia and the rest of the world

International student accommodation

Dormitories exist on many of the main campuses. Private rental is also available but there are some tricky laws and cultural points that you will need to thoroughly check out with the International Student Office before paying any money.

Click here for more information, tips and advice on international student accommodation and university housing.

When you get your own place in South Korea, be very aware that you may have to leave a HUGE amount of money as a deposit. This not only presents the problem of finding the money in the first place but of having hundreds of thousands of Won in cash when you leave!

English less widely spoken than in some countries

Expensive country to study in

Very exam-based system

Japan Students alert.......do u wanna grab the oppurtunity to select for Whitworth Student for Merit Scholarship

Mitsui & Company (U.S.A.) Inc. Selects Whitworth Student for Merit Scholarship

Mitsui & Company (U.S.A.) Inc. has selected Whitworth College student Clint Lacaden as the recipient of a $2,500 merit scholarship. The scholarship will assist Lacaden with his studies in international business and Asian culture.

Lacaden, a resident of Mililani, Hawaii, is a senior international business major at Whitworth. He played football for two years at Whitworth, was a member of the track and field team for two years, and is a member of the Hawaiian Club.

Once he graduates from Whitworth next May, Lacaden plans to work for a company in Japan to acquire additional business, cultural and language experience. He would then like to return to Hawaii and pursue a business career that would allow him to help strengthen the cultural and economic ties between Japan and Hawaii.

Mitsui & Company (U.S.A.) Inc. is one of the largest Japanese trading companies operating in the United States. The Mitsui Merit Scholarship Program began in 1994, with scholarships being awarded annually to exemplary undergraduate and graduate students who undertake Japanese or Asian studies and express an interest in pursuing careers in international business.

The purpose of the scholarship program is to encourage the integration of Japanese and Asian studies in business-related disciplines at selected colleges and universities. The program's long-term goal is to improve American students' understanding of both Japanese and Asian cultures, and develop stronger Japanese-American partnerships.

Whitworth College and Seattle University are the only institutions in Washington State selected by Mitsui & Company (U.S.A.) to participate in the scholarship program. Each school nominates one candidate to receive the scholarship every academic year.
