Mitsui & Company (U.S.A.) Inc. has selected Whitworth College student Clint Lacaden as the recipient of a $2,500 merit scholarship. The scholarship will assist Lacaden with his studies in international business and Asian culture.
Lacaden, a resident of Mililani, Hawaii, is a senior international business major at Whitworth. He played football for two years at Whitworth, was a member of the track and field team for two years, and is a member of the Hawaiian Club.
Once he graduates from Whitworth next May, Lacaden plans to work for a company in Japan to acquire additional business, cultural and language experience. He would then like to return to Hawaii and pursue a business career that would allow him to help strengthen the cultural and economic ties between Japan and Hawaii.
Mitsui & Company (U.S.A.) Inc. is one of the largest Japanese trading companies operating in the United States. The Mitsui Merit Scholarship Program began in 1994, with scholarships being awarded annually to exemplary undergraduate and graduate students who undertake Japanese or Asian studies and express an interest in pursuing careers in international business.
The purpose of the scholarship program is to encourage the integration of Japanese and Asian studies in business-related disciplines at selected colleges and universities. The program's long-term goal is to improve American students' understanding of both Japanese and Asian cultures, and develop stronger Japanese-American partnerships.
Whitworth College and Seattle University are the only institutions in Washington State selected by Mitsui & Company (U.S.A.) to participate in the scholarship program. Each school nominates one candidate to receive the scholarship every academic year.
