Accomodating Canadian College Life
If you’re planning to study abroad but want to remain close to the United States, why not consider completing your education at a Canadian institute of higher learning? You’ll be able to stay continental, but can still enjoy the experience of going to school in another country. (And don’t forget to get your Passport - as of January 2007, Americans will need this important document to enter and exit Canada.)Though the scholarship opportunities for foreign students who are completing certificates, classes, degrees, or other programs in Canada are not comprehensive, there are some excellent funding opportunities if you’re willing to do a little research and legwork.
To get you started, some of the larger monetary awards and financial support available to American students studying at Canadian colleges and universities have been organized below.
Profession-Specific Canada Study Scholarships
If you’re presently enrolled in a doctoral program and your thesis research is on Ukrainian or Ukrainian-Canadian topics in history, education, arts, social sciences, women’s studies, library sciences, or humanities, you can try for the Helen Darcovich Memorial Doctoral Fellowship. The award amount is $12,000 and is overseen by the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies.
The Raymond Davis Scholarship provides one yearly $1,000 award to a Canadian, German, or U.S. student who intends to pursue an undergraduate, graduate, or post-graduate degree in engineering or applied science.
For first, second, or third year undergrad students who hail from either Canada or the U.S. and who are enrolled in a construction-related degree (such as town and country planning, engineering, or architecture/design), the NAWIC Founders’ Scholarship Foundation offers the opportunity for $500-2,000 in underwriting.
Merit-Based Canada Study Scholarship
If you’re an international visa student at the University of Victoria in British Columbia, keep your GPA spotless and you might just win the UVic Bachelor of Commerce International Scholarship worth $1,000 CD (Canadian dollars.) You’ll need to be studying business management and/or finance to be eligible.
Institute-Specific Canada Study Scholarships
If you’re planning to go to the Plattsburgh SUNY campus and then transfer to a Canadian college or university for a summer or semester abroad experience, you can apply for a number of scholarships (applications are available at the Plattsburgh campus Global Education Office.), including:
- The Global Scholars Award, a $300 scholarship whose recipients must have maintained a minimum 2.5 GPA.
- The Global Education Office Study Abroad Scholarship, worth $1,000 to a student whose GPA is at least 2.7.
- The $1,000 Rosenberg Pathways to Peace Scholarship, given to multiple students who have maintained at least a 2.8 GPA and who are able to demonstrate financial need.
